A computer monitor's screen resolution is the width and height of the computer screen in pixels and is a function of the monitor's capabilities and the computers video card. Users may set their screen resolution to different settings.
The most common resolutions are 800x600 and 1024x768, although many flat screens have higher resolution. It is important that the page is not larger than the viewer's screen or they will have to scroll to see the rest of it. Most people don't mind scrolling down but they shouldn't need to scroll sideways.
As a guide for an 800x600 screen, design the page for 775x420 and for a 1024x768 screen make it 1000x600. This page size is 760x590.
